A successful guide to wet room installation starts with the construction beneath the tiles: correct floor falls, dependable drainage and a fully waterproofed enclosure are what protect the property for years to come.
For homeowners, landlords and property investors, the value of a wet room lies in getting these unseen details right. A poorly planned installation can lead to standing water, cracked grout, leaks into adjoining rooms and expensive remedial work. This arrangement works particularly well in smaller bathrooms, en suites and ground-floor accessible bathrooms. Choosing the drainage layout
Drainage is one of the most important parts of any wet room. The waste must carry water away quickly enough, and the floor must fall consistently towards it. A linear drain positioned along one wall can allow the floor to slope in a single direction. This often suits contemporary layouts and larger tiles. A central or offset point drain may work well in a more compact room, but it requires falls from several directions and can influence tile size and cuts.
The available depth below the floor is a key factor. A concrete slab and a suspended timber floor present different challenges, and the existing soil pipe location may affect where the drain can be placed. Where the waste route is restrictive, raising part of the floor or selecting an alternative layout may be necessary. Preparing the floor and walls
A wet room needs a sound, stable base. Old finishes, failed adhesive, loose boards and damaged plaster should be removed before the new system is installed. On timber floors, strengthening or overboarding may be required to create a rigid surface that will not flex under foot. On solid floors, the surface must be clean, level where required and suitable for the chosen waterproofing system.
The shower area is then formed to create the correct fall. This may involve a purpose-made former, a screeded floor or a carefully designed floor build-up. The aim is a subtle, even slope that sends water to the drain without feeling awkward to walk on. Too little fall can cause pooling; too much can make the floor uncomfortable and complicate tile installation.
Wall preparation matters just as much. Boards and substrates around the shower must be suitable for wet areas. Standard plasterboard should not be relied upon as the waterproof barrier behind shower tiles. Where partitions, niches or boxing are being built, they should be completed and made stable before tanking begins.
Tanking is not optional
Tiles, grout and silicone are decorative finishes. They are not a complete waterproofing solution. Tanking creates the waterproof layer behind the finished surface and is essential in the shower area, across the wet room floor and at all junctions where water could find a route into the structure.
A professional system normally includes a waterproof membrane or coating, reinforcement tape at corners and joints, and sealing collars around pipe penetrations and the drain. The coverage should continue far enough beyond the immediate shower zone to protect areas exposed to splashing and floor water. Each product system has installation requirements, including drying times, and these need to be followed before tiling starts.
This stage is not the place to cut corners. A bathroom can look excellent on completion while a hidden weakness behind the tiles is already allowing moisture into the floor or walls. Careful preparation, compatible materials and experienced application protect both the bathroom finish and the property itself.
Tiling, screens and the details that affect daily use
Once the waterproofing has cured, tiles can be installed using adhesives and grouts suitable for wet environments. Porcelain is a popular option because it is hard-wearing and available in a wide range of finishes. For floors, slip resistance should be considered alongside appearance. Very smooth polished tiles may look striking but are not always the best choice for a surface that will regularly get wet.
Tile size should suit the drainage design. Large tiles can create a clean, modern appearance, but smaller formats or mosaic sheets may be more practical where the floor falls in several directions. Good tile setting is about more than neat lines: falls must remain effective, cuts around the drain need to be precise, and movement joints must be allowed for where needed.
Glass screening can significantly improve the day-to-day performance of the room. A fixed panel retains the open character of a wet room while reducing spray towards the basin, WC and doorway. The size and position depend on the shower head, the room dimensions and who will use the space. Frameless glass has a minimal look, while framed options can offer a more defined, practical solution.
Ventilation and electrical work
A wet room produces a great deal of moisture, so effective extraction is essential. An appropriately specified extractor fan, correctly positioned and vented outside where possible, helps control condensation and protects painted surfaces, joinery and ceilings. Opening a window can help, but it should not be the only means of managing humidity.
Lighting, mirrors, shaver points and underfloor heating must be planned with bathroom safety zones in mind. Electrical work should be undertaken by a competent electrician and designed around the finished layout, not added as an afterthought. Recessed lighting and illuminated mirrors can be effective, but they need suitable fittings for their location.
